Planting Seeds

An Ableton Live extension that builds empty track scaffolds — named tracks, BPM, and cue points — so you can focus on music, not session setup.

Requires: Ableton Live 12 · Extensions beta enabled (Settings → Extensions → Enable Extensions)

Features

Genres

Pick a style and a full session is created: named track groups, correct BPM, and arrangement cue points.

Supported styles: Electronic/Techno, House, Hip-Hop/Trap, Drum & Bass, Trance, Rock, Pop, Jazz/Neo-Soul, Ambient, Lo-Fi, Metal, R&B.

After building: Cmd+G to group tracks. Tracks marked ↩ → use Create › Insert Return Track.

Instruments

Adds a single empty named track (MIDI or Audio) with a suggested signal chain shown as reference. Drop your own .adg preset onto the track after.

Analyze Audio

Drop audio stem files to automatically detect:

  • BPM (with ½× / 2× correction buttons)
  • Song sections (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Breakdown, Outro) as cue points
  • Which instrument groups are present as individual tracks

For best results — use Ableton's stem separation:

  1. Right-click any audio clip in Live → Extract Stems
  2. Live creates: Drums / Bass / Melody / Vocals / Other files
  3. Switch to Finder (Cmd+Tab — it stays active while this window is open)
  4. Drag the stem files into the drop zone — multiple at once works
  5. Each stem is analysed in isolation, which is far more accurate than a mixed master

Stem type is detected from the filename automatically. You can override it per file using the dropdown on each stem card.

Guide

Built-in manual covering all features, the Extract Stems workflow, .adg preset tips, and keyboard shortcuts.

Install

  1. Download plantingseeds.ablx from the Releases page
  2. In Ableton Live 12: Settings → Extensions → Install Extension → select the file
  3. Enable the extension — a "Planting Seeds…" option appears when you right-click any Audio or MIDI track

Build from source

Requires the Ableton Extensions SDK (1.0.0-beta).

npm install
npm run package # outputs dist/plantingseeds.ablx

Notes

  • Creates empty named tracks only — no audio or MIDI content is added
  • Drop your own .adg rack presets onto each track after building
  • The Extensions SDK is still in beta; things may change across Live versions
  • Audio analysis uses the Web Audio API (FFT-based) and works best on clean isolated stems
